| Beschrijving keerzijde | A bold cross of the Order of Christ dominates the field, with a small circular pellet or annulet placed at the centre of each of the four quadrants formed by the arms of the cross. The cross is rendered in the splayed, patée style characteristic of Portuguese coinage of the period, set within a beaded inner border. The circumferential Latin legend, reading 'IN HOC SIGNO VINCES' ('In this sign you shall conquer'), encircles the entire design, separated from the inner border by a flat field. The overall composition reflects the strongly religious iconography associated with Portuguese imperial and maritime coinage of the sixteenth century. |
