| 表面の説明 | Central field bears the denomination numeral LXXX (80 Reis) beneath a large royal crown rendered in relief, with a decorative rosette ornament below. The circular legend, reading in Latin, identifies the issuer as João, by the grace of God Prince of Portugal and the Algarves. Small cross-pattée stops punctuate the legend at intervals around the periphery. |

Struck under João as Prince Regent rather than king — his mother Maria I had been declared legally insane in 1792, leaving him to govern but unable to assume the throne until her death in 1816. The tostão denomination itself was already archaic by this issue, a holdover from the old Portuguese monetary reckoning that would be swept away entirely when the decimal real system eventually prevailed. Production ran across just three years before the Napoleonic invasion of 1807 upended the Lisbon mint's operations entirely and the court fled to Brazil.
