Reverse description A plain Greek cross of bold, even-armed design occupies the central field, with four ornamental five-petalled rosettes arranged symmetrically in each quadrant between the arms of the cross. The devotional legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES — 'In this sign thou shalt conquer' — encircles the design in Latin, punctuated by decorative star stops. The entire composition is framed by a beaded inner border, reflecting the Johannine monetary reform coinage struck at Lisbon.
