The tostão was introduced under João III as part of a broader reordering of Portuguese silver coinage, its value fixed at 100 réis. The Porto mint — active intermittently and always secondary to Lisbon — struck this third-type issue during a narrow window in the mid-1550s, making it considerably scarcer than its Lisbon counterpart. João III died in 1557, and much of his reign's coinage was absorbed into circulation financing Portuguese imperial administration across Brazil, Africa, and the Estado da India, contributing to substantial attrition of domestic silver.
