Reverse description The reverse centres on a large Cross of the Order of Christ, rendered in the distinctive Portuguese style with splayed, potent-like terminals, occupying the majority of the field. The cross is boldly struck in high relief against a plain field. Surrounding the cross, the Latin legend . IN . HOC . SIGNO . VINCES (In this sign thou shalt conquer) runs along the inner border of the coin, referencing Constantine's vision and the crusading heritage of the Portuguese monarchy. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped at the edges, as is characteristic of hammered silver coinage of this period.
