| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms, the shield quartered with the arms of Portugal and the castles of the Algarve, surrounded by a circular legend. The date 16 - 41 is divided to the left and right of the crowned shield in the field. The royal crown surmounting the shield is rendered in the elaborate style typical of early Restoration coinage. The peripheral legend names the king as João IV, by the grace of God King of Portugal, running continuously around the coin. The flan is irregular, as characteristic of hammered silver coinage of this period. |
