Obverse description Central field displays the Portuguese royal arms — the quinas shield charged with five escutcheons each bearing five bezants in saltire, surmounted by a royal crown — flanked by the mint-master's initials D and G in the field to left and right of the shield respectively. The entire central device is rendered in high relief typical of Manueline hammered coinage. A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the surrounding peripheral legend, which reads + I : EMAИVEL : R : P : ET : A : D : GVIИE : D - G, identifying Manuel I as King of Portugal and the Algarves, struck in a Gothic-influenced lettering style.
