Obverse description Image of Captain Witold Pilecki Pilecki Witold (1901-1948), cavalry captain, underground activist. In the years 1918-1921 in the Polish Army. Participant of the September 1939 campaign, co-founder of the Secret Military Organization. In the years 1940-1943, a prisoner of the Auschwitz camp, where he was sent voluntarily in order to obtain information about the treatment of prisoners by the Germans. Co-organizer of the camp underground organization - the Association of Military Organizations. In 1944, a participant in the Warsaw Uprising, then in the Polish Army (2nd Corps) in Italy. After returning to the country, in 1947 he was arrested, and in 1948 he was sentenced to death for intelligence activities for the Polish authorities in exile, executed.
