| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Marianne facing right, her flowing hair elaborately styled with a wreath of wheat ears and leaves crowning the head. The effigy is rendered in high relief in a refined neoclassical style after the original design by Émile Rogat. The legend RÉVOLUTION FRANÇAISE arcs around the periphery, with PROJET 1988 inscribed in the left field behind the bust. The engraver's signature E. ROGAT appears in small lettering along the lower rim. |

A standing draped female figure to the right raises one arm aloft while a reclining figure with attributes of abundance occupies the lower left; a central male figure leans over the altar, and dynamic figures with banners surge upward in the background against a clouded sky. The commemorative dates 1789 m 1989 are inscribed in large numerals along the lower exergue, referencing the bicentennial of the French Revolution. |
