| Obverse description | Dark enamelled field with a gilt relief of St. Peter's Basilica facade at centre, flanked by two inset coin designs in silver relief: on the left a depiction of a crowd scene with the denomination 10 and the legend CITTÀ DEL VATICANO, on the right an effigy of Pope John Paul II in pontifical vestments with the legend IOANNES PAULUS II and regnal year AN.XXIV.MMII. Above the basilica appear a classical bust and a papal tiara in relief, while below are depicted a bell tower, the papal crossed keys emblem, and praying hands.
