Obverse description The obverse features an all-text design with the name ELL WHITNEY (error for ELI WHITNEY) arranged along the upper periphery, the birth and death dates 1765-1825 in the central field, and the inscription INVENTOR OF THE COTTON GIN / REVOLUTIONIZED THE SOUTH'S ECONOMY arranged around the lower portion of the field. The piece notably contains the misspelling ELL in place of the correct ELI.
