Obverse description Full-length figure of Saint Stephen, patron saint of the Cathedral of Metz, standing facing within a large oval beaded inner border. The saint is depicted in liturgical vestments, holding a large martyr's palm frond in his right hand and a book (the Gospels) in his left, with a small stone at his feet — a traditional iconographic reference to his martyrdom by stoning. The figure is rendered in a late-medieval stylised manner consistent with early 17th-century German municipal coinage. The circular legend enclosing the design reads S. STEPHANVS PROTHOMART, identifying him as protomartyr, with decorative stops separating the legend elements.
