背面描述 A finely engraved panoramic view of the city of Zürich as seen from the lake, with the Limmat river in the foreground populated by sailing vessels and waterfowl in flight — the latter being the popular source of the coin's nickname 'Vögelitaler'. The city's characteristic skyline, dominated by the twin towers of the Grossmünster and the spire of the Fraumünster, stretches across the middle ground beneath a richly worked clouded sky. The date MDCLI appears in the lower exergual area flanked by rosette ornaments, with a floriate cartouche below. The circumscription ·DOMINE·CONSERVA·NOS·IN·PACE· runs along the upper periphery within a beaded border.

Zürich struck this piece in the aftermath of the Dreißigjähriger Krieg, during a period when the Swiss cantons were navigating their newly codified independence under the Peace of Westphalia. The city's mint was producing thaler-sized silver at a moment of cautious civic optimism, and the "Vögelitaler" designation — a collector nickname derived from the small birds appearing in the design field — has stuck so firmly that dealers rarely bother with the official type name.

The 1651 date places this among the earlier issues of the post-war series. The Wunderly and Hürlimann references both treat it as a distinct subtype, not merely a die variant of the broader run.
