Victor II Frederick of Anhalt-Bernburg was born on 29 October 1700, making this piece a birthday commemorative struck in his 58th year. The production of a dedicated fractional thaler for a princely birthday was not unusual in the fragmented German states — minor courts used coinage as a relatively cheap form of dynastic display, and Anhalt-Bernburg's mint at Ballenstedt obliged with some regularity.
Mann 611b distinguishes this from at least one other die marriage for the same event, suggesting the issue was struck in more than one phase or from replacement dies.
