The transfer of the Electoral title from the Palatinate branch of the Wittelsbachs to the Bavarian branch, formalized in 1623, was constitutionally explosive, and Maximilian's mints moved quickly to assert the new rank in silver. The 1/3 Thaler denomination itself was a product of the monetary chaos gripping the Reich during the Kipper- und Wipperzeit, when debasement had made smaller fractional coinage both commercially necessary and politically loaded.
