Max Gandolf von Kuenburg, Archbishop of Salzburg from 1668 to 1687, pursued an aggressive monetary policy that included countermarking foreign silver to validate it for local circulation — a practice that reflects how severely fragmented the Holy Roman Empire's currency supply remained even in the latter seventeenth century. The countermark effectively deputized an existing ⅔ Thaler, most likely of north German origin, as acceptable tender within Salzburg's jurisdiction without the expense of reminting. Zöttl's cataloguing of this specific countermark application is the primary reference by which these pieces are distinguished from uncountermarked host coins.
