| Reverse description | The reverse presents a remarkable heraldic composition arranged in a radial pattern: the central field bears the arms of Zürich (a diagonal bar on a hatched field) within a beaded inner circle, surrounded by a ring of smaller shields arranged in a chalice or goblet formation — the feature that gives this Thaler its distinctive 'Kelchtaler' designation. An outer ring of approximately twenty additional cantonal and subject-territory arms fills the broad outer field, each shield carefully delineated, representing the confederation of Swiss states and allied territories. No legend is present; the entire reverse is devoted to this complex armorial display executed in the hammered style characteristic of early sixteenth-century Swiss coinage. |
