The two-thirds thaler denomination was a direct response to the monetary chaos of the Kipperzeit's aftermath and, more immediately, the Leipzig Foot of 1690 — though Saxon mints were already gravitating toward this fractional thaler well before that standard was codified. John George II ruled Saxony from 1656 until his death in 1680, meaning the 1681-dated examples of this type were struck posthumously or in the transition year under John George III. The Dresden and other Saxon mints ran overlapping production on these pieces, which complicates precise attribution within the KM#559 grouping.
