| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central device depicts a rocky island rising from the sea, surmounted by a tall palm tree, symbolizing steadfast endurance amid adversity. Two three-masted sailing ships are shown under sail at either side of the island, one to the left and one to the right. The motto legend EX DURIS GLORIA arcs above, while the fineness and date inscription occupies the lower portion of the field. The overall design reflects the emblematic baroque tradition common to German territorial coinage of the period. |

Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg was carved out of the broader Welf dynastic holdings in 1635, and by the 1670s Johann Friedrich was aggressively positioning the duchy for elevation to Electoral status — a goal finally achieved in 1692, after his death. The ⅔ Thaler denomination itself was a practical response to the monetary chaos following the Kipper- und Wipperzeit debasing crisis earlier in the century, offering a coin tied more reliably to Hamburg banco exchange rates than fractional issues from less stable mints.
The two-thirds thaler became the dominant large silver denomination in northern German commerce precisely during this decade.
