George I issued this ⅔ Thaler series during the period when he was actively maneuvering — diplomatically and militarily — to secure the newly created Electorate of Hanover, a dignity granted by Emperor Leopold I in 1692 but bitterly contested by the existing Electoral colleges for years afterward. The ⅔ Thaler denomination was the workhorse of north German commerce, pegged to the Reichsthaler system through the Leipzig Foot of 1690, which standardized it at precisely this weight to facilitate trade across fractious principality borders.
George inherited the British throne in 1714, making coins from this precise window the last he struck as a purely German prince.
