Frederick August II's reign was cut short in 1854 when he died from injuries sustained after being thrown from a carriage during a trip to Tyrol — one of the more ignominious ends for a German sovereign of the period. The 1/3 Thaler denomination itself was already an anachronism by the early 1850s, surviving in Saxon coinage largely through the inertia of the Dresden Mint's established production schedules rather than any pressing commercial need.
The short production window of just two years means surviving examples span a narrow die sequence.
