The eagle bears on its breast a large quartered shield of arms representing the composite territories of the Habsburg dominions, including the arms of Austria, Hungary, Bohemia, Lorraine, Bar, and Tuscany among others. The eagle holds a sword in its right talon and an orb in its left. The mint mark letters K-B appear in the lower field beneath the eagle's tail. The date 1748 and the devotional legend IN TE DOMINE SPERAVI are distributed around the periphery within a beaded border. |

Francis I became Holy Roman Emperor in 1745, but his role in Habsburg coinage was complicated from the start — Maria Theresa held the hereditary lands, and Francis's co-ruler status on Austrian issues was more constitutional formality than political reality.
