Rietberg was a tiny Westphalian county that punched well above its weight in minting activity during the late seventeenth century, exploiting the fragmented monetary rights of the Holy Roman Empire to produce large silver pieces that circulated far beyond its borders. The ⅔ Thaler denomination — effectively a Gulden-Thaler — emerged from the Leipzig Convention of 1690 as a standardized type, but issues like this 1688 piece predate that agreement, placing it among the transitional coinage struck while German princes were still negotiating the fractional Thaler system.
Francis Adolph William ruled Rietberg from 1660 until his death in 1690, a period during which the county's mint was notably productive despite its modest territorial size.
