Obverse description Draped bust of Cardinal Charles of Lorraine facing right, wearing ecclesiastical robes with a prominent collar, the hair and beard rendered in fine detail, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The circumferential Latin legend is separated from the central effigy by the beaded border, running along the outer rim between two milled edges. The portrait is executed in a Renaissance style typical of mid-sixteenth-century German-influenced thalers, with naturalistic facial features conveying the cardinal's identity with authority.
Obverse script Latin
Obverse lettering ✠ CAROLVS : CARDE : LOTHOR : SAC : IMP PRIN
(Translation: Cardinal Charles of Lorraine, Prince of the Holy Empire.)
