| Obverse description | Draped bust of Duke Charles I of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel facing right, portrayed with a voluminous curled wig tied with a ribbon. The effigy is rendered in a refined Baroque style with fine detail in the hair and drapery. The circumferential legend reads CAROLVS D.G.DVX BR.ET LVN. in Latin, separated by a stop, encircling the portrait. The mint mark 'E' appears in the exergue below the truncation. The coin is bordered by a finely toothed milled rim. |

Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel's 1/3 Thaler denomination was a practical concession to the Reich's monetary conventions — the Reichsthaler system required fractional coinage that could interlock with neighboring states' currencies, and the 1/3 Thaler filled the gap between the smaller Groschen-based coins and the full Thaler. Charles I's reign saw the principality increasingly drawn into Hanoverian orbit, a dynastic proximity that shaped fiscal policy throughout the 1770s. He died in 1780, the year after this type ceased production.
