The Bishopric of Lübeck was a Protestant ecclesiastical territory — an anomaly of the Peace of Westphalia, which in 1648 froze its confessional status as Lutheran despite its nominal episcopal character. August Frederick, who administered the territory from 1666 until his death in 1705, issued coinage as a secular prince rather than a functioning bishop. The ⅔ Thaler denomination was essentially a North German response to the Dutch Rijksdaalder, gaining traction in the 1670s as a practical trade unit across the Hamburg-dominated commercial zone.
KM#61 is among the scarcer issues of this short-lived denominational experiment within Lübeck's minting output.
