Anthony Ulrich ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel for over half a century, but his later years were consumed by a single political obsession: securing the elevation of his house to electoral dignity. The ⅔ Thaler denomination — a specifically North German commercial convention tied to the Leipzig and Hamburg trade fairs — was the workhorse of regional exchange during precisely this period, struck in quantity to facilitate the prince's considerable diplomatic expenditures.
In 1710, at age 76, Anthony Ulrich converted to Catholicism, a move that scandalized Protestant Germany and was almost certainly calculated to align Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel more closely with Habsburg interests.
