Adolphus Frederick III ruled Mecklenburg-Strelitz for less than four years before his death in 1708, leaving a short and administratively thin coinage record. The duchy itself had only been formally constituted as a separate line in 1701, following the partition of Mecklenburg between the Schwerin and Strelitz branches — meaning this 1703 piece was struck within the first two years of the new duchy's existence as an independent issuing authority.
