Obverse description The rampant Zürich lion, depicted in high relief facing right, stands upon a rectangular plinth while supporting the city's oval shield with its forepaw; the shield bears the characteristic diagonal bicolor of Zürich. The lion holds a palm branch over its right shoulder, symbolizing civic pride and authority. The circumferential Latin legend MONETA REIPUBLICÆ TURICENSIS runs along the upper and lower periphery of the field, executed in well-spaced serif lettering. The design is rendered in the elaborate Baroque style characteristic of late eighteenth-century Swiss civic coinage, with finely chased surface details on the lion's mane and the shield's ornamental frame.
