Obverse description The Basel basilisk — a winged dragon with a crested head and serpentine tail — stands facing left in the central field, clutching the arms of Basel (a black diagonal staff on a white field) with its foreclaws. The creature is rendered in fine relief with naturalistic feathered wings spread upward. A small ornamental rosette appears at the base of the design. The circular Latin legend DOMINE CONSERVA NOS IN PACE (Lord, preserve us in peace) surrounds the device, separated from the toothed border by a fine inner rim.
