Obverse description The Basel basilisk — a winged cockatrice with scaled body, spread wings, and serpentine tail — stands facing left in the center of the field, clutching the arms of Basel (a black crozier on white ground) within an ornate Rococo cartouche at lower left. The creature is rendered in high relief with fine detail on its plumage and scales. The circular Latin legend reads DOMINE · CONSERVA · NOS · IN · PACE (Lord, preserve us in peace), separated by pellet stops, running around the periphery. The coin exhibits a broad milled rim.
