Obverse description The Basel basilisk, depicted as a winged dragon with a serpentine scaled body, stands prominently in the centre of the field, its head turned to the left with open beak and forked tongue extended. At the lower left, an ornate cartouche bears the arms of Basel, rendered in high relief with elaborate Baroque scrollwork framing. The circular Latin legend reads DOMINE · CONSERVA · NOS · IN · PACE ('Lord, preserve us in peace'), separated by rosette stops, and runs along the entire periphery within a dentilated border.
