Zürich's thaler coinage of this period was produced under the authority of the city's mint at a time when the Swiss Confederation had no unified monetary system — each canton, and many individual cities, struck their own silver on locally negotiated standards. The Zürich thaler circulated primarily within the city's commercial sphere and into the Rhine trade routes, competing alongside Reichsthalers, Burgundian cross thalers, and a bewildering array of cantonal issues.
The HMZ 2-1164 attribution covers a span of six years, during which minor die variations are known. Wunderly's earlier census identified these differences but did not assign distinct variety numbers, leaving attribution to die study rather than standard reference lookup.
