Obverse description The Basel basilisk, depicted as a crowned dragon with spread wings, stands in profile to the right at center, supporting with its forelimbs an ornate oval cartouche bearing the arms of Basel — a diagonal black bend on white — rendered in high relief with elaborate baroque scrollwork. The creature's serpentine tail curls beneath the shield, and its scaled body fills the field with considerable artistic detail. The mintmaster's initials IDR appear in the lower field beneath the shield. The encircling Latin legend reads DOMINE · CONSERVA · NOS · IN · PACE, separated by pellets, within a bold milled border of raised beads.
