Basel's thalers of the late seventeenth century were struck under considerable monetary pressure, as the city struggled to maintain a credible silver coinage while Swiss trade routes shifted and the broader Holy Roman Empire grappled with currency debasement in the aftermath of the Thirty Years' War. The city-republic jealously guarded its minting rights as a mark of civic autonomy, and issues of this period were produced in comparatively small quantities. The Davenport reference places this squarely within the European crown-sized silver series, but Basel examples are notably underrepresented in major collections.
