Basel's thalers of this period were struck under the authority of a city that had formally joined the Swiss Confederation in 1501 but jealously maintained its own coinage rights and monetary identity well into the seventeenth century. By 1640, the Thirty Years' War was grinding toward its conclusion, and Swiss cities benefited enormously from their nominal neutrality — Basel in particular, positioned on the Rhine at the intersection of German, French, and Swiss trade routes, saw sustained demand for a reliable silver coinage.
