The eagle fills the majority of the reverse field within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding Latin legend, reading CVM+HIS+QVI+ODERT+PACE+ERAM+PACIFICVS (a biblical quotation from Psalm 120:7, 'With those who hate peace I was peaceful'), encircles the design and reflects the humanist and Protestant sensibilities of the canton in the mid-sixteenth century. |
