Obverse description Griffin passant to left, rendered in fine archaic style with spread wings, the body shown in profile with forelimbs raised and one paw extended forward. The creature's avian head is turned slightly upward, exhibiting a sharply hooked beak and prominent eye. A single ear of grain or branch appears in the lower field beneath the griffin. The type is characteristic of Abderan coinage and reflects the city's longstanding use of the griffin as its civic emblem.

Reverse description Within a shallow incuse square of linear border, a youthful male head faces left, rendered with fine classical workmanship. The hair is styled in short, neatly combed locks swept back from the forehead in a manner consistent with late fifth- to early fourth-century Greek portraiture. The legend ΠΡΩΤΗΣ, identifying the magistrate Protes, runs vertically along the right side of the incuse square in retrograde Greek characters. The recessed square format is typical of contemporary Thracian Greek civic coinage.
