The Agrianes were a Paeonian tribe from the upper Strymon valley whose warriors became among the most valued light infantry in Alexander the Great's campaigns — their king Langarus was explicitly praised by Alexander and offered a Macedonian royal marriage alliance. This coin borrows its type from the Paeonian king Patraos, whose own issues drew heavily on Macedonian stylistic conventions, creating a layered imitation that places the Agrianes firmly within the Macedonian cultural orbit of the late 4th century.
