| Reverse description | Lion prowling vigorously to the right in high relief, depicted with musculature and mane rendered in the Hellenistic tradition; between the forelegs, the control letters A and Δ appear in the field. A horizontal exergual line divides the design, below which the ethnic legend ΜΑΣΣΑ ΛΙΗΤΩΝ is inscribed in Greek characters. The abbreviated civic name ΜΑΣΣΑ curves along the upper periphery of the coin, identifying the issuing city of Massalia. The composition is bold and dynamic, consistent with the series of Massalian silver fractions struck during the late second century BC. |
