Akanthos, a Macedonian coastal colony founded by Andros, derived its name from the thistles covering the local terrain and its wealth from controlling timber routes feeding shipbuilders across the Aegean. The city struck silver using bullion from the mines of nearby Mount Pangaion, the same mountain range that would later fund Philip II's military campaigns.
SNG ANS 7#37 places this tetrobol within a well-documented sequence, though die linkage studies for Akanthian fractional silver remain incomplete.
