Additional information

Erythrai was one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League, situated on the Çeşme peninsula of the Aegean coast. Its early coinage falls squarely within the period of Persian dominance over Ionia following Cyrus's conquest of Lydia in 547 BC — these coins were struck by a city politically subordinate to the Achaemenid empire yet maintaining its own civic monetary tradition, a fragile autonomy that would collapse entirely after the failed Ionian Revolt of 499–493 BC.

The mint went effectively silent following Persian reprisals after the revolt's suppression. Surviving pre-revolt pieces are correspondingly scarce.
