The deity's flowing locks are bound with a wreath of ivy, the leaves of which are visible across the crown and behind the ear. | Beschrijving keerzijde | A broad-bodied amphora with a wide mouth and prominent high loop handles occupies the central field, rendered in careful relief with a flared foot and ribbed neck. The vessel is depicted frontally and serves as the city's principal reverse type, referencing Mende's celebrated wine trade. The ethnic legend ΜΕΝΔΑΙΩΝ is disposed around the amphora, with ΜΕΝΔ to the left and ΑΙΩ to the right, all in archaic Greek lettering appropriate to the late fifth and fourth centuries BC. |
