Baletium was a minor Peucetian settlement in Apulia, and its coinage is among the least documented of any southern Italian mint. The references cluster this issue within a tight twenty-year window that corresponds broadly with the period of intense Greek colonial pressure on indigenous Italic communities — a moment when local elites across the region began adopting Greek coin formats precisely to engage in trade on Greek terms. Almost nothing is known about Baletium's internal politics or its mint authority.
The Jameson collection specimen, lot 79, remains one of the few well-provenanced examples and has anchored the type's attribution since its publication.
