Augusta Traiana, modern Stara Zagora in Bulgaria, was a prosperous Thracian city that minted bronze provincials with unusual consistency through the Severan period. The city owed its founding — and its name — to Trajan, which gave local authorities a certain pride in civic coinage that outlasted many neighboring mints. Septimius Severus came to power through civil war in 193, defeating Pescennius Niger in the east, and provincial mints across Thrace rapidly aligned themselves with the victor.
