Nicopolis ad Istrum, founded by Trajan following his Dacian campaigns, became one of the most prolific bronze-issuing cities in Moesia Inferior during the third century. The city's coins under Gordian III are unusually well-documented partly because the tenure of each consular legate can be approximately dated, making Modestus a useful chronological anchor within the reign.
