Gela's bronze coinage of this period reflects the city's precarious position during the Carthaginian offensive in Sicily. The campaigns of Hannibal Mago and Himilco between 409 and 405 BC systematically destroyed Selinus, Himera, and Akragas before Gela itself was sacked and abandoned in 405 BC — making issues from the final years of this range among the last coins the mint ever struck. The city was never reoccupied as a significant urban center.
The tetras denomination, valued at three onkiai, was peculiar to Sicilian bronze metrology.
