Reverse description A cuttlefish (sepia) depicted frontally at center, its mantle tapering downward and eight tentacles curling outward symmetrically in high relief, filling the circular field. The treatment of the cephalopod is characteristic of Sicilian bronze coinage of the period, displaying confident and fluid engraving. No legend or additional devices are present. The motif alludes to the maritime character and fishing traditions of Messana as a coastal Sicilian city.
