The "Wuschelkopf" — literally "mop-head" — types of East Noricum belong to a cluster of late La Tène silver coinage produced by Celtic tribes occupying the eastern Alpine region, broadly identified as Norican. The distinctive abstracted head that gives this type its modern nickname reflects a gradual Celtic reinterpretation of Macedonian prototypes, drifting so far from the source over successive die generations that the original model is nearly unrecognizable. Norican silver circulated heavily in the context of tribal gift exchange and mercenary payment, not retail trade.
