Vaballathus was nominally a client king under Rome, his mother Zenobia wielding the real power in Palmyra while the western empire cycled through a succession of short-lived emperors. These Alexandrian tetradrachms were struck with both rulers' portraits as a deliberate political maneuver — Zenobia's regime presenting Vaballathus as co-equal with Aurelian to legitimize Palmyrene control over Egypt without yet openly declaring war. When Aurelian finally stabilized the west and marched east in 272, the fiction collapsed within a single campaign season. Palmyra fell, Zenobia was captured, and this coinage became an accidental archive of one of antiquity's most audacious imperial gambits.
